Frequently asked questions about eSIM

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM card built directly into your device. Unlike a physical SIM, it is activated remotely by scanning a QR code, with no physical card to insert.

What types of devices are eSIM compatible?

Recent smartphones (iPhone, Samsung, Google Pixel), tablets (iPad, Samsung Tab), smartwatches (Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch) and some laptops support eSIM technology.

Does my iPhone support eSIM?

All iPhones from the XS (2018) onward are eSIM compatible. Since the iPhone 14, US models work only with eSIMs and have no physical SIM slot.

Do all devices support eSIM?

No. Most recent high-end devices support eSIM, but some entry-level models and mainland China versions are not compatible.

Is an eSIM tied to a single phone?

Yes, an eSIM is activated on one device at a time. However, most phones allow you to transfer the eSIM to a new device via the original QR code or carrier support.

How do I check if my device is eSIM compatible?

Use the PlanJapan checker at the top of this page, or check your device settings under Cellular Data then Add Plan. If the eSIM option appears, your device is compatible.

Can I have multiple eSIMs on the same device?

Yes, most modern smartphones can store multiple eSIM profiles (up to 8 on a recent iPhone) but only two can be active at the same time.

How do I install an eSIM on my phone?

Open your phone settings, go to Cellular or Mobile Data, then Add eSIM. Scan the QR code provided by PlanJapan after purchase to activate your Japan plan.

Can I transfer my eSIM to a new device?

Yes, most eSIMs can be transferred to a new device via the original QR code or by contacting PlanJapan. Some plans also allow automatic transfer between iPhones.

Does an eSIM work without an Internet connection?

The initial activation requires a Wi-Fi connection to scan the QR code, but once activated the eSIM works like a regular SIM and connects directly to the mobile network.
