Install and activate your eSIM

Step-by-step guide to install and activate your eSIM on iPhone or Android.

Installing a PlanJapan eSIM takes about 2 minutes. Follow the steps for your device below. You'll need a stable Wi-Fi connection and the QR code sent to you by email after your purchase.

📱 Before you start — is your device eSIM-compatible?

Most recent smartphones support eSIM, including:

• iPhone — iPhone XS and newer (iOS 12.1+)
• Samsung Galaxy — S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25, Note 20, Z Flip/Fold series, A54 5G, A55 5G
• Google Pixel — Pixel 3 and newer
• OnePlus — 11, 12, 13 series
• Huawei, Xiaomi, Motorola — most 2022+ flagship models

Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked. If you're unsure, check with your home carrier before installing.

🍎 How to install your eSIM on iPhone

1. Start the eSIM setup

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), then tap Add eSIM (iOS 16+) or Add Cellular Plan (older iOS).

2. Scan the QR code

Use your iPhone's camera to scan the QR code we sent you by email. You can also save the QR code to your Photos and upload it from your Photo Library.

3. Label your eSIM

After scanning, give your eSIM a label (for example, "Japan Travel") so you can identify it easily. You can pick a default label or create a custom one.

4. Set your default line

On the Default Line screen, select your new eSIM for cellular data.

5. Finish setup

Your new eSIM should now appear in your cellular plan list. You're done!

🔧 Enable Data Roaming (important)

Your eSIM will only work in Japan if Data Roaming is turned on for it.

1. Open Settings > Cellular on your iPhone.
2. Select your new eSIM from the plan list.
3. Scroll down to Data Roaming and toggle it on.

✅ How to check that your eSIM is active

1. Check that you see at least one signal bar next to the network icon on your iPhone.
2. Go to Settings > Cellular, tap your eSIM, and confirm Data Roaming is on.

🤖 How to install your eSIM on Android

Exact wording may vary slightly between Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and other brands. Below are the common paths.

1. Open the eSIM settings

Samsung Galaxy: go to Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
Google Pixel: go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Download a SIM instead?
OnePlus / Oppo: go to Settings > Mobile network > Add eSIM.

2. Scan the QR code

Tap Scan QR code (or Use QR code) and scan the code we sent you by email. If you already have the image on your phone, choose Use an image instead.

3. Confirm and download the eSIM

Your phone will connect to our network and download the profile. This usually takes 10–30 seconds. You may be asked to confirm by tapping Add or Activate.

4. Label your eSIM

Name your new eSIM (for example, "Japan Travel") so you can tell it apart from your main line.

5. Enable the eSIM and Data Roaming

1. In SIM manager (or SIMs), make sure your new eSIM is enabled.
2. Tap the eSIM, then turn Mobile data and Data Roaming on.
3. Set the eSIM as your preferred line for Mobile data.

✅ How to check that your eSIM is active

1. Look at the status bar — you should see signal bars next to the eSIM's name.
2. Open your browser and load any website to confirm the connection works.

⏰ When should I install my eSIM?

You can install your eSIM anytime before your trip — it will only start using data when you turn on Data Roaming in Japan. We recommend installing it at home, on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly, so you can sort out any issue before landing.
