Turn on the APN for your unlimited eSIM
No data getting through, or is Personal Hotspot greyed out? One setting is missing: the APN. Two minutes, one value to type.
If you bought a data plan (10, 20 or 50 GB), do not enter this APN: yours is a different one, and this would cut you off the network. Your exact settings are on the installation page you received by email.

Leave the username and password empty. No other field needs filling in.
- Open Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data)The green icon with the antenna, in your iPhone settings.
- Tap your eSIM lineUnder “Cellular Plans”, pick your eSIM line — not your usual line.
- Open “Cellular Data Network”Right at the bottom of that line’s screen. It holds several sections, each with its own APN field.

In each section, fill in the APN field only. Username, password, MMSC and MMS proxy stay empty.
Skip the MMS section and the “Allow Others to Join” switch appears, then turns itself off after a few seconds. That is an incomplete APN, not a fault.
That is expected, and a good sign: leave the value there.
- Restart your iPhonePower it off completely, then back on. Without that restart the settings are not picked up.
- Turn on Personal HotspotSettings → Personal Hotspot, then “Allow Others to Join”. The network name and password show up underneath.
Tethering usually works with no setup at all. Only create this APN if it is blocked, or if data is not coming through.
- Open Settings → Network & internetOn Samsung it is “Connections”. The wording changes from brand to brand.
- SIMs → your eSIM line → Access Point NamesAlso called “APN”. Make sure you are on your eSIM line.
-
Add an access pointTap + or “New APN”, then fill in two fields only.

- Restart the phonePower it off completely, back on, then turn the Wi-Fi hotspot on again.
Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel, Oppo… every brand names its menus differently. Search “APN” in the settings search bar: it is the shortest way there.
Turn the hotspot back on and leave it for 30 seconds. If it stays on and another device connects, you are set. Mobile data should be flowing normally too.
Still not working?
- Check data roamingSettings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options: “Data Roaming” must be on. Without it, a foreign eSIM gets no signal in Japan.
- Check which line carries your dataSettings → Cellular → “Cellular Data”. Your eSIM line must be the one selected, not your usual line.
- Do the four fields againOne missing character is enough. Use the Copy button rather than typing vmobile.jp by hand, section by section.
