Tottori
Spectacular sand dunes facing the Sea of Japan, a museum devoted entirely to sand sculpture and fishing villages out of time. The country's least populated prefecture is also one of its most disorienting, in the best way.
Shimane
Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's most sacred shrines, the lanes around Matsue castle and sunsets over Lake Shinji. Legend has it that every god in the country gathers here each autumn.
